Something To Think About Part VII : To Be An Artist

In today’s time it is widely debated what is the duty of an artist. Whether that is a singer, rapper, writer, or painter. To quote the beautiful singer Nina Simone, I agree that an artist’s duty is “to reflect the times.”

How can you be a true artist and and not reflect the times? An artist means to express what you see. So how can you not reflect the times?Art of any form is supposed to be a vehicle for change. Through music, words, or paintings people are motivated to produce action that will change the world for the better. Some singers and rappers will say ” I’m just making music, I don’t care about social or political issues.” My question would be… then why are you even an artist? Ignoring or refusing to speak on issues that are diseasing the world is ignoring the reason for art and the duty of an artist. It is natural for an artist to reflect the times because an artist will naturally express what they see. So if an artist ignores the natural action to speak on social or political problems then they’re not an artist by any means. Those who produce any form of art and don’t reflect the times… are making art, but my opinion are not artists.
